A watt saved is more important than a green watt generated. After the grand success of distributing 9W LED bulbs at 70 INR, the government has now launched 20W LED tube lights. They are priced at just 230 INR while market prices are at the least 500-600 INR. These 20W LED tubes are 4 feet long, just like our old 36/40W tube lights.
How Much Will I Save? Is It Green?
LEDs save a lot of energy, around 80% compared to old incandescent bulbs, and around 30% compared to fluorescent lights. Hence you will be able to save a few hundred bucks every year on energy bills alone. Plus they last 2-5 times longer than fluorescent tubes and around 30 times more than incandescent bulbs. Hence you will also be saving on the cost of buying new tubes or bulbs. Furthermore, LEDs produce very less heat and this aids in saving air conditioning costs. There is no hazardous mercury in LED lights unlike fluorescent tubes. Longer life means less waste, and hence these are much greener than the older technologies.
How Much Light? Warranty?
This 20W LED tube produces 20,000 lumens which is slightly lesser than our old tube lights. But LEDs being unidirectional, all the light comes from the front of the tube and not Omni-directionally (light produced at the back is lost) as in the case of fluorescent ones. The LED tubes come with a long three-year replacement warranty and will easily last around five-ten years depending on use.
How Do I Replace My Old Tube Light? Do I Use The Old Choke?
The LED tubes come with their complete fittings. You do not need to use any of the old fittings or chokes. If you are a little good with tools, you can remove the entire old fitting, screw the new one in the same place (you might need to drill a hole) and connect the wires. Do not throw the old tube lights into the bin, instead look for people who can safely recycle them.

Why Is The Government Subsidising?
When power consumption reduces, there are lesser requirements for newer power plants. Power plants, typically coal and natural gas, are highly polluting and require a lot of resources such as land and water. Even if we can produce electricity from renewables, it is much cheaper and makes more sense if we can cut down our consumption instead. Also, the procurement cost of LED bulbs in the second phase has massively reduced because of mass production and the government is no longer subsidising them. And did we mention that you would get much lower electricity bills too?
