Once you start planning how to harvest the rain water, there are a few types of devices you can use, based on your needs and the area from where you will collect the water.
Here are some of the most commonly used devices that you can take a look at:
- Barrels To Collect The Water – Using a water barrel to collect the rain water is the easiest way you can try to collect the water. You can place it on any surface, such as your terrace, your balcony, your garden, or even connect it to a pipe that collects the water. The ideal barrel will be one which has a downspout. It will help the water to flow downward and get collected in the barrel. Most such barrels are easily found at local stores, and even online, at reasonable prices. You can also try making one yourself by following our tutorial on how to make a rain barrel to collect rainwater.
- Dry Rain Water Harvesting – The dry method of collecting rain water is a system in which the pipes are used only during the rainy season. As a result, the pipes will not collect or hold on any water once the rains are over. The main purpose of the pipes is to collect the water from only one source and send it to the main collection area. These systems do not hold back the water and there is no risk of any stagnant water remaining. It also uses only one or two pipes at the most. It is also the perfect system to collect water in areas where rains are scanty, or only for a few months. The dry rain water system is less expensive and less complicated as compared to the wet one.
- Wet Rain Water Harvesting – The wet method of collecting rain water is mostly an underground system. To do so, you need to connect a number of downspouts from different sources. It will help you to collect more water, as the water will come from multiple sources instead of only one. You can collect the water in your barrel or tank and store it anywhere in the house. As it involves underground piping, it can be a bit more expensive as compared to the dry collection system.
