If you are looking for a reason to plant more trees, here’s one that will definitely peak your interest. According to reports, a CSIR laboratory in West Bengal has designed a ‘solar power tree’ that can not only give you fresh oxygen, but can also generate power.
The ‘solar powered tree’ is said to take only four square feet of space and can produce about three kilowatts of power. That’s about as much electricity as five households use on an average.
To put things into perspective, it takes about five acres of land to generate one megawatt of power, therefore it would take 50,000 acres of land to produce 10,000 mega watts of power. In contrast, this solar powered tree produces as many kilowatts of power as a photovoltaic cell — that takes only about four square feet of space.
In a statement to IANS, Sibnath Maity, chief scientesit at the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), Durgapur said, “The challenge was to come up with a design so as to generate more solar power in less land space.”
Inaugurated by Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan, this tree has branch-like structures that hold up the 30 photovoltaic panels.
With one solar powered tree that can power five households, this new technology can bring about a revolution in the way we use solar powered energy. Don’t you think so?
