Let me state it right here. It takes at least 500 to 800 years for a disposable sanitary pad to completely decompose!

Reducing and reusing is the mantra we’re trying to follow here, and yes, we’re trying to help you have a greener period, where you can create less waste, reuse the products that you have, and also save yourself a good amount of money in the bargain.

Did you know that the regular sanitary pads that we use are non-biodegradable and non-recyclable? Imagine the amount of sanitary waste that’s lying out there, more of which will be created each day, adding to the already huge pile. Not to mention the many hygiene issues it can cause by releasing toxic gases in the air and contaminating any water body it comes in contact with.

Today, with women consumers being aware of the choices they can make, brands too are getting more green-savvy. That’s why we have some amazing sanitary products that are not only organic and good to use, but are also reusable and recyclable, and quite budget-friendly.

4 Eco-Friendly Sanitary Napkins Available In India:

1. Eco Femme – A social enterprise based in Tamil Nadu, India, it was founded in the year 2010 and is led by women. Their products are good for the skin and environmentally sustainable. Made out of cotton, the pads are very budget-friendly, come in beautiful designs and are reusable and biodegradable. Each purchase helps needy girls get access to sanitary pads and helps women across rural India with employment opportunities through the initiative. Available at ecofemme.org and online sites such as Shycart, NaturalMantra, Craftsvilla and more.

2. Looms And Weaves – The brand has a collection of reusable cloth sanitary pads made out of cotton as well as flannel. It comes with eight layers of absorbent flannel to make sure you’re comfortable and clean through the days. As it dries very fast, you can purchase lesser pads. The striped fabric on the back lasts for about 75 washes, but you can replace it if needed. Made out of eco-friendly material, it is waterproof, very absorbent and biodegradable. Available at Amazon, MarketplacePulse, Esasta.

3. Sckoon Organics – Founded in the year 2001, the brand has a range of organic reusable cloth sanitary pads that are hygienic and budget-friendly. They use only Certified Organic materials for the pads and even the dyes used are free of lead or phthalate. You can buy a pad with a removable liner and reuse the pad, even as you change the liner (helps buy fewer pads). Available at Amazon.

4. Hi Baby – The brand specializes in reusable cloth sanitary pads made out of bamboo fibers. They come in different sizes to suit your needs and have some beautiful designs as well. You can also buy the mini wet bags along with the pads to help you store your pads comfortably and in style. As they are imported from the US, they are a little more expensive. Available at Amazon.

And if you want to make your own reusable cloth sanitary pad at home, here’s a quick tutorial.

Honestly, I haven’t tried any of these yet (definitely am planning to!), but if you have, do share your thoughts and reviews to help others 🙂
