If you live in Mumbai and love cycling too (but haven’t really been able to use your passion much owing to a lack of parking space and other amenities), there’s good new now. According to the BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation), 47 pay and park spots have been identified across CST, Fort, Nariman Point, Colaba, Marine Drive and other areas in South Bombay (SoBo).
The BMC is supporting the demands of Mumbaikars to help them cycle more, especially on the home to work commute. With difficulty in parking spots, many cycle-enthusiasts, who also want to take up this non-polluting option of commuting, find it a hassle to carry the cycle along.
As per reports, there will be about 250 reserved spots in South Bombay for cyclists. Says Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta, “Cycling benefits not just the person but his environment as well. We need a people’s movement around this cause.”
Of course there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to ensure cyclists in the city have better access to cycling safety. Cycling lanes and stands to properly keep the cycle in place at the parking spot are just a few of the necessities that the authorities will also have to look into.
Are you a cyclist who lives in Mumbai? I’d love to hear your feedback. How often do you cycle? Have you ever cycled to work or for a long distance instead of using a vehicle that causes emission? What issues did you face, and what, according to you, should be some of the things that a cyclist would need in this city to make it a better and safer place for people to be encouraged into using the cycle as a modes of transport?
